Part 2 on how to find a good wedding photographer in Winnipeg:

I won't get into the doom and gloom of wedding photography horror stories, but I will talk a bit about red flags and how to avoid bad situations before it's too late.

First of all, I've seen situations where couples have booked a photographer that doesn't have an online portfolio, hardly has any references and who offers cheap wedding packages. Results? More often than not, the couple is thoroughly disappointed with the pictures.

Keep in mind that a good photographer will be popular. Happy couples spread the news about good photographers, and word of mouth referrals are gold. Don't let someone's self-promotion convince you of their worth. Wait until you hear it from unbiased sources.

Some photographers hardly have any online exposure. I know that for some, the internet is not their favourite place to hang out at, which is fine in some cases. But find out why they're not online. You want photographers who are enthusiastic about their work and who have a wide variety of images and examples to show.

We all know that good wedding photographers don't come cheap. That being said, there is quite the range in prices. I know people have paid anywhere between $250 and $5000+ for a wedding photographer in Winnipeg. People often say that you get what you pay for. But it's not always the case. Though the price is a good indicator of the results you'll get, it's not always true. I think the strength of a portfolio speaks more about the photographer than their price list.

Ultimately you want to have a good feeling from the photographer's portfolio and you want to be excited about the kinds of pictures you'll be getting. Your wedding day is probably the biggest party you'll ever throw for yourself (if you're not P. Diddy), and you'll be so caught up in the moment that you won't have much time to take it all in. Your photographer is there to capture everything during the one day that will fly by faster than you expected.

Enjoy the planning, and most of all, enjoy your big day!

I have many lenses that I love, but the one that I constantly fall back on is my 50mm f/1.8 lens. The itty bitty lens that doesn't look like much, but is the one that often makes my job that much more rewarding.

A 50mm lens is basic, really. I never even thought I needed one until I overheard someone talk about its greatness. Shooting hand held in a low-lit situation? Not needing a tripod? Capturing incredible depth and style with its shallow depth of field? Small, compact and light? Cheap?? What is this miracle lens?? (I asked myself).

A 50mm! Who knew. I was a poor student at the time, but it certainly did not deter me. I went and bought one about 5 hours after I overhead that conversation.

It's my cheapest lens in my stash but out of the 6 lenses that I have, it's the one I use about half the time. And it's the one I most encourage my students and friends to buy when they start off with photography.

Another thing I love is a cool-naming photography term called circles of confusion. Mmm-mmm good - circles of confusion to a photographer is like chocolate ganache to a dessert maker. Circles of confusion are those fuzzy round circles you get in a photo when small dots of lights in the background get out of focus due to a very shallow depth of field. Also, the farther the distance they are from your focus point, the bigger and juicier they get. They are absolutely delightful! And there's no better way to capture them than by using an f/1.8 lens.

So to celebrate this much-loved lens and its effects that it creates, I've assembled a handful of images that highlight exactly that: its deliciousness!

But now that I'm an aged and weathered photographer (ha!) my 50mm f/1.8 might soon make way for my newest infatuation: the scrumptious 24mm f/1.4. Can you imagine??? .4 more of an aperture opening?? I know I might sound geeky to some, but I know my fellow photog friends will agree, we all go crazy over big apertures on pro lenses!

There's nothing like a cozy Saturday morning in a warm house with an adorable family. The Wheelers let me come bright and early to catch Hannah and Evan at their best. It was an absolute delight to take their pictures and I can't get over how cute little baby Evan is! I dropped off the CD of pictures for them yesterday and got to hold Evan again. More baby time for me! I hope you enjoy. :)

Finding a Wedding Photographer in Winnipeg: Part 1

As we know well, wedding season is just around the corner. Yes, it's the dead of winter now (actually, it's still autumn - yikes!), but if you're a bride (or a groom) or if you know one, they are quite busy right now, even though for most engaged couples, the actual day isn't for another 6 or more months.

Being a bride myself just recently, I know the stress that it can cause. But I also know that wedding planning can be a lot of fun, especially when it comes to finding a good photographer.

There are lots of factors that come into play, but being both a bride and a wedding photographer, I've compiled a few tips and tricks for all of you who are neck-deep in a hunt for an excellent photographer.

4 things to consider when researching photographers:

1. Look at the photographer's portfolio. Are the pictures unique? Are they awe-inspiring? Do they speak of the emotion and love that is apparent between a couple on their wedding day? Compare their work to other well-known, talented photographers in Winnipeg. Sometimes a mediocre portfolio isn't apparent until you see it next to a good one.

2. Ask for references. Talk to people that have had this photographer on their day. Get feedback!

3. A good photographer is not just someone who knows the technicalities of taking pictures. It's an artist who knows how to take ordinary situations and turn them into photographic masterpieces. It's someone who knows how to read your personalities and translate that into pictures that express it well.

4. That being said, a good photographer is not just someone who has good instinctive vision and creative ideas - they must be able to translate their ideas into well-constructed, technically-sound photos.

What do you get when your family of 8 is coming over for dinner and you only have 6 chairs and a tiny kitchen table? ..... You pull out the blue lawn chairs, you cozy up to your neighbour, you do NOT put your elbows on the table, and.... you pull out your wide angle lens for a snapshot.

Only at 11mm was I able to document this family dinner. Nothing stops us from improvising and making things work. Who knew I could fit that many people at my table. (and ladies, if you're wondering, the guy with the mouth full of food is still single).

I haven't gone shooting (just for myself) in a loooong time, at least, not a planned photo shoot. But I finally did go this week and took a bunch of shots with my macro lens, as well as my trusty little 50mm 1.8 lens. I was putting together some examples of triptychs for my friend Melanie (hi Melanie!) and threw a few pictures together. They were sitting on my desktop, and now they're sitting on my blog....

Yes, you can still find real green vegetation in the dead of winter here in Winnipeg. (the indoor kind only!)

Well here's something worth getting excited about if you're me: a new logo!

I've been logoless for over 6 months now, and the other day I decided to whip one together. I have no idea how this came to mind, but I like the colour and I like its simplicity. I waited a few days before "launching" it, just in case I changed my mind on it. But so far I like it, and so now I'm announcing its official release as my new business logo.

I hope it makes you want to hire me! ;)

A lot of people say "a picture is worth a thousand words", and though that may be true sometimes, I think that pictures can also be worth just one word. Or at least, the first word that comes to mind when we see the picture. I think remembering and giving value to the first word that popped into our mind the moment we see a picture is an integral part of appreciating art. Although I'm a photographer and I like pretty pictures, I'm also a person of words and I think words are very powerful when intertwined with images.

concert shoots

I came across Latsch Studios' live music shots, and it got me excited about shooting live concerts again. Last time I shot live music was back in September, and though I've done lots of music shoots in the past year and I also often do it just for fun, I was really starting to miss it today. A lot of my live music work was done for hire, so I don't have anything up on my website or on my blog, but if you do want to take a peek at it, I've got my photos on the 100 Nons website. I've done a lot of concert shoots for them and loved every single one of them. Not only are they great promoters of the local franco-manitoban music scene, but they're also delightful people and very colourful artists/musicians. I hope you enjoy these photos as much as I've enjoyed taking them!

I was walking through the mall tonight and bumped into my friends Joanna and Dan who had a cut-out copy of an article from the Uniter that featured Chad's band and my photo of them. I completely forgot to check the Uniter to find it - but now that I have it, I'm so happy with the result! The photo looks amazing for what usually looks flat for photos printed on newspaper. I know it's just a college paper, but it still made my day!

A few weeks ago, this happened. I don't know how it started, but it happened right after we finished our product photography shoot. We migrated to Duncan's grungy bathroom, and started posing for Carmin. All these shots were taken by her, using Duncan's lighting (I believe). Fun fun, though I would recommend to NOT put men's shaving cream on your face if you're not a man. It burns, actually. But I'll do it in the name of photography, of course. These shots made me laugh, and there are even more over on Carmin's wonderful blog.

Sharks on Logan Avenue

Logan Avenue. Have you ever walked down that street? Back in September I was making my way from McPhillips to Main Street using Logan, a part of town I hardly drive through. In another lifetime, the drive would have seemed eventless, but for some reason, its mundanity seemed oddly peculiar. And suddenly an idea was birthed: why not do a band shoot on Winnipeg's most blah street ever?

Some people say Winnipeg is boring. I think we see too much of the same thing on too many streets. Why else is everyone attracted to the exchange district for photo shoots? But this time I saw something strangely appealing to Winnipeg's typical, boring streets. Instead of looking at the setting as whole, I was looking at it in fragments - isolating certain spots in order to conceive new ideas. So I decided to use it for my next shoot, which was to be with Codename: The Sharks!. Chad had talked about doing some shots in front of colourful walls. And now it seemed like Logan had it all - colourful walls, but also diverse texture and washed out buildings that were too new to be "heritage", and too old to be noticed.

So what better way to photograph a band whose musical style I can hardly find words to describe! You have to listen to them before they can be described to you. And sometimes you have to use a nondescript location before you can recognize its riches.

Codename: the Sharks! are currently recording an EP and are almost (almost!) done. If you can't wait to get your hot little hands on their upcoming album, you can catch a taste of it at the Lo Pub tomorrow night, where they'll be rocking out for you. Otherwise stay tuned, and I'll be sure to announce when their EP is done.

Aceart makes winter warmer with its annual exhibit

Although I've considered myself an artist since my early years (ok ok, that wasn't several decades ago), I haven't shown my work in art galleries as much as I would want to. I'm trying to change that, especially now as I've experienced the most amount of artistic inspiration than ever. It seems to have stemmed from my experience at school last year, as well as the new friendships I've developed with other artists.

Which brings me to Aceart's winter warmer show - one that Dallas strongly encouraged me to participate in. Along with her, and Duncan, I've submitted a piece yesterday for their annual member group show. I'm getting excited about the show and seeing all the other work, and I hope you will join us! The opening night is on Saturday November 29th, and you bet your winter boots that I'll be there. The piece I submitted is a photo that a lot of you will recognize and have probably seen around a few times. It's one of my favourites, and it'll be for sale. Yes! You can own it! Very exciting. :)

So if you happen to be in the neighbourhood, drop by and enjoy local art! I hear there will be music and a winter glow.

The other day a bunch of us got together with the idea of doing a product photo shoot. Our subject: the best red wine I have found under the $15 mark. Ailsa, Duncan, Carmin and Chad were all holding reflectors, white drapes and white cardboard, positioning lights and umbrellas, and I was there with my trusty D200. Results? A fun shoot with pikanta results. Yum!

Local designers had their stuff strutted at Stripped, a recent fashion show event at the Graffiti Gallery. Carmin, Dallas and I took in the action from the front row. I used almost every piece of gear I had in my bag and fired off these shots. The house was full, the music was hoppin', and the local fashion talent was well worth the hype this event got. Back in June I did headshots for my pianist-friend Rachel and just recently I've been reformatting them for her. While I had them on my screen last week I thought they'd be worth blogging, considering I have been on the headshot theme. So here they are. Feedback & comments are welcome (I know I have pv graduates looking at my blog). Headshots can and are supposed to say a lot about the person and their profession. It's a fun and challenging way of creating environmental portraits that tell a bit more about the subject.

A photographer friend of mine recently asked me to shoot some headshots for him. He's a freelance photographer and has been hard at work marketing and setting up his business these days. And now it was my job to make him "hireable", at least based on his face.

If it isn't his awesome portfolio that will get him new clients, then I'm sure his face will! It's not easy for a photographer to be photographed, but I think he did a great job. And he said I did a great job too. What are photo friends for afterall...

It was both a challenge and a fun experience to do this shoot. We had a beautiful character apartment in a heritage building as our location, but the biggest challenge was having to be in crammed quarters. Good thing I'm short and I only had one umbrella, I managed to squeeze my way around and take these shots.

We ventured into the staircase as well, which was a great idea, except for the tenants walking by wondering what the bright flashes were all about. We even did a few shots in the bathroom - though it had to be the tiniest room I ever shot in (if I even consider myself "in" the bathroom for that shot. I'm clearly outside the doorway and shooting at a very wide angle!)

Thanks to aspiring model Kate, and the lovely Marcie for allowing us to use her apartment (and modeling too!). Andrea Pelletier's designs can be seen at a fashion show this coming Sunday evening at the Graffiti Gallery. Should be fun!

Now that we're in a new neighbourhood, and it's been a lovely season so far, Chad and I have been taking advantage of the many sights and sounds of our little community. And on one Friday evening, we took in the many tastes of the area as well. Warm and close enough to walk, we took to the sidewalk and meandered over to Bonfire Bistro, a tiny restaurant featuring wood fire oven baked gourmet pizzas. Chad had the roasted vegetable and I had the shrimp pesto. I must say - it was fabulous. (both the randonnée, and the dinner... and the company!)

Black Sheep Diner

I went out for breakfast this morning at a little restaurant very easy to miss on Ellice near the U of W. Black Sheep Diner - it has cute little windows dressed in home-sewn yellow & brown fabric curtains, mismatched tables and chairs, a charming upright piano and the coolest vending machine ever: it dispenses art!! (I got sandlewood goat milk soap. mmm)

And best of all - I *must* mention the cappuccino I had. First of all, I didn't expect to find fancy coffees on the menu at such a small breakfast diner. But they did. I've had bad cappuccinos in my day at little diners ("my day". What, am I 60?), and I've had some that are really bad. So I was a little apprehensive when I ordered it.

But I'm sure you've guessed by the placement of the photo of my cappuccino, it was honestly the best cappuccino I've had in Winnipeg. No joke. And it came in the most adorable cup ever. The foam was perfect and the espresso was velvety. I would've had 5 cups if it wasn't for my low caffeine tolerance.

Breakfast was amazing and cheap (I had an omelet with GOAT cheese (what a delicacy! again, not expected from a diner) and some kind of chard or kale in it). So good! and I'm sure healthy. The toast was borderline room temperature, but I'll let that pass.

This is almost the longest blog post I've ever published, and it's only about a diner, so goes to show that you must visit this quaint little place. Oh, and our waiter was wonderful. I've never given that big of a tip at a diner before (considering I'm an artist!).

late night music

I went to Chad's show last night at the Lo Pub, thinking that Duncan and I would go and set up a bunch of lights on stands all over the stage to create some pretty awesome shots. Turned out the stage was very closed-in, and our set up just wasn't working. I suppose you could say we weren't "feeling" it. We left that idea to the wayside and decided to enjoy the show instead. (Codename: The Sharks! followed by Old Folks Home. It was an awesome show!)

I took a few "funky flash" photos (term we learned in school for a technique I always thought was just flash + long shutter speeds). I also did the old zoom-out and twist while shooting at low shutter speeds. Some pictures turned out pretty interesting, but they're sitting on my memory card - and I ran out of time this morning. So I'll have to post them during this weekend, while the turkey roasts.

PS: no I don't cook turkeys. At least, I haven't learned how, yet.

Woke up bright and early on a Saturday morning to have breakfast with some friends and then do some family portraits with them. Avari was the star of the show, naturally, and surprised me with quite a few "poses". The stair case pictures happened just as I noticed her inching her way down the stairs with nothing but a diaper on and her bed sheet wrapped around her like a toga. No need to pose my subject, she was the show!

Amanda O and Duncan M came over on Sunday and we had 2 shoots between 1 delicious meal. Here are photos from our day time wandering in the neighbourhood - as well as photos from our night time flash tests. Fun fun fun!

Really, what I should be busy with right now is editing hundreds of photos from a shoot last week and prepping for a photography workshop...but instead I'm playing in Lightroom with my stonehenge pictures again. I had to blog another one. It's fun being a photographer, but sometimes it's just too much fun.

I'm part of a small geeky photo club called f/action (new website coming soon!), and last Sunday we went on a fun shooting escapade at a location just outside the city. We call it Stonehenge. The weirdest, eeriest place, but while the sun was still in the sky, we took a bunch of pictures. I haven't had time to go through all of my pictures yet, but these are the first two that I picked out. I'm using LightRoom2's trial right now and enjoying it very much. Here are the first results. More to come later...

The other day I decided to use 3200 ISO and go to the Black & White setting on my camera and use an unlikely lens for candid generic shots at a busy outdoor concert. I had nothing to lose, and I wanted to limit myself to a certain set of parameters to see what the outcome would be. Although having a fixed focal length of 105mm and knowing that I was making the B&W an on-camera decision, I still went and shot and quite enjoyed myself. I got close-ups of strangers walking around that I wouldn't have normally dared to capture (without having to be right in their face), and I embraced the loss of colour and focused on texture, contrast and the quality of light. Results: a breath of fresh air from my usual shooting.

I went to a show on Friday night at the Zoo and used my 50mm lens instead, but with the same settings. I picked out the ones from that night that stood out to me.

I recently changed my website's home page after many months of almost doing it. My site will slowly evolve to include more recent pictures and a better representation of my current work. Making this website is so much time-consuming work (!!), especially since I'm making it all by scratch in html, but soon it should be bright, shiny and new. And not to mention paté made of duck liver... or was it goose liver? ...covered with a layer of butter and spread on baguette slices. This is how we like to start our photo expedition. I've had fun with the many colour assignments we've had lately. Can you guess which image represents which pairs of complimentary colours from the Additive Colour Wheel (magenta and green, yellow and blue, red and cyan) and the Pigment Colour Wheel (red and green, yellow and purple, blue and orange)? It's easy to guess which image is what I know, but now you know which pairs come from which colour wheel. :)

It doesn't take much to make me dash for my camera and take a picture before the "moment" vanishes. In this case, all it took were 3 key elements:

1) Duncan's hand (which I could probably just stop at. He's been a model for more student shoots this year than anyone else has... though Anna comes in close. He's the best of both worlds: loves to pose, and as a photographer understands photographers' strange fetishes. He sacrificed 50 seconds of non-drinking time to pose here.)

2) His bubbly glass of beer

3) A beam of light from a projector

Mmmm. Perfect combo. These pictures could even make Anna start drinking beer. I would bet on that.

I'm pretty excited about my first attempt at using mixed media to create a photographic work of art. I cut up some polaroids of power lines/structures and stacked them on a background that I painted (acrylics on canvas). I then wove copper wiring through the canvas to mimic the power lines to connect the three structures.

Power lines have always reminded me of how things can be physically connected over a long distance. But I also think it translates in a more ethereal sense. The fragments of the power structures represents us as humans, the pieces that we're made of, and yet we are still intact, standing side by side, connected by "lines" of energy. I also included the moon in the sky which to me is nature's icon of connectivity: wherever we are on the earth, we look up at night and we all see the same moon. It connects us all and reminds us that we aren't as isolated from each other as we think we are.

And so there we go, I never thought photography school would inspire me to create something like this. This year has been full of good surprises!

how I discovered portraiture photography

I loooooove shooting portraits, as I have discovered in the past couple of years. But it wasn't always the case. I got my first plastic point-and-shoot camera on my 13th birthday. I used it mainly to record life (I was, and still am, obsessed with keeping records of my life). When I was young, I never thought my camera could be a form of artistic expression, although I did dabble in abstract photography without even realizing it at the time. I thought my pencils and paints were for art. But photography?

Before my first trip to Europe when I was 18, I "upgraded" my camera. A little naive, I ended up chucking my 30$ plastic camera in the back of my closet, and thought spending 10 times more money would get me a better camera. But all I had was an electronic version of my first camera - with a zoom (wow!) and automatic rewind. Nevertheless, it wasn't until I was back from that first big trip, and developing all my pictures (at Wal-Mart, mind you... Gasp! The horror!) that I realized that photography might be something I actually want to pursue a little more as a new way of making art. (yes, even Walmart prints can inspire a young, wide-eyed Gabrielle)

After that, I found out what SLR meant and got my hands on one. I discovered the joy of actually being able to CONTROL what I wanted to see in my prints. I started experimenting with b+w film and upgraded labs (if Japan Camera and Blacks are much of an upgrade).

Well, since then my love for photography blossomed. But I still was bent solely on artistic/abstract/landscape/nature photography. I always thought doing portraits was boring and reserved for Walmart studios with pastel backgrounds.

But one shoot changed that. I realized that my 105mm f2.8 macro lens had more uses than just giving me stellar macro shots. Portraiture! So on a sunny Saturday January afternoon, I got my 2 willing models (a friend and my sister), a pile of nice clothes, jewelry and make-up and set up a mock studio in an empty corner with big windows at the office where I worked at the time. After 2 intense hours, 350 pictures and a headache (who knew photographing could be that strenuous!), the portraiture bug got me. (here's a picture from that fateful shoot)

And since then, I never get tired of doing portrait shoots. In fact, I strive on them. I know I still have a long way to go, and so much to learn... but I think I'm in the right place for that: school. PrairieView has been a giant leap for me, and I'm excited and freaked out all at the same time as I'm propelling forward into the photographic unknown. All I know is that there's nothing like marveling at the beauty of life after a good shoot. That's enough for me to keep going.

My latest portrait shoot was with my sister Rachel this week. Shot on Ilford XP2 and processed at Shoppers (yeah, yeah, I know. But I'm broke and I've had no time to develop my own film this week). So please excuse the poor digital quality. These were the pictures on the CD the lab gave me.

I confess. I have a powerline fetish. I went trudging through the snow on Monday, to take pictures of powerlines with a polaroid camera. I got some delicious shots, but I also snapped a few digital shots too. I persevered despite the strong winds and knee-deep snow... and all for this: to finally update my blog after quite the absence. Now that I know I have more faithful readers (Hello Lauralee! Hello Ken!), I'm a little more inspired to update more often. (I thought Anna was the only one that ever read this blog.)

Our lessons on flash have been particularly fun - more than I anticipated. Sometimes all the technical garble throws you for a loop, but once you actually TRY it, the technique comes naturally. The following shots start with an initial flash, and then finish off with a long exposure to capture ambient light. Fun fun fun!

Seeing without a camera?

I've been thinking a lot about why photographers take pictures and about the thought-process that goes through our mind before and while we're taking pictures. Maybe I've been thinking more and photographing less because of the flu that's tied me down a lot in the past week... but none-the-less, I think thinking about taking pictures is just as important as thinking about the picture itself.

I was driving home today, watching the really bright sun shining down on the longest skating path in the world (as it happens to be). I was on Taché, looking down on the Red River, with the little pine trees set up along the winding path, and tiny skaters making their leisurely way down river. There was something about the hazy look of the light and I was thinking how awesome it would look to photograph this scene with a super tele-photo lens, squishing the elements together (maybe with a 300 or 400mm lens, kind of à la David Wityk, if you've seen his photographs of Mitzi's Restaurant and the BDI at the WAG).

But lately, there's been something to be said about enjoying a scene without even considering to photograph it - just simply and purely enjoying it with your naked eyes. On Wednesday there was a lunar eclipse, and I managed to enjoy it while hurriedly driving around from one place to another. I was too rushed to pull out my camera and tripod, so I settled to enjoy it without a lens between it and me.

That got me thinking more... why do a handful of people on this earth feel the need to photograph every striking or beautiful thing that they see? I think part of it is because we get so excited about seeing something, that we want to share it with the world. Or maybe we want to challenge ourselves to capture it exactly how we're seeing it, or how we want to see it, and then show off to others that we actually managed to pull it off.

So maybe there is a bit of ego that goes behind every photographer's work. But I know that there is a lot of heart and passion too. I think as photographers we feel something through our eyes that not everyone does, and just because we manage to master the techniques of cameras, we get to share our discoveries with others.

Since starting school I've been photographing a lot more than I ever have before, and I think it's been fine-tuning the way I see (like "good seeing", as we learned in Creative Imaging). It's almost like a sensory-overdose for my eyes. Lately, as we've been getting a lot of sunny days, I've been surprised to see how much my eyes have been catching a lot of distinct intricacies created by the sun. I even developed a new fetish for bare tree branch shadows on flat surfaces of houses and buildings. I never used to see this as strikingly as I do now!

So I say, keep shooting. And keep looking to see. But take the time to enjoy those moments without obstructing your view with a lens. There's a lot to enjoy out there, and it's ok to put the camera down once in a while. Even chefs put aways their knives and sit down to eat.

Festival du voyageur

Friday night all the students braved the cold and walked around Provencher Boulevard to shoot the opening of the 39th Festival du voyageur. I've been attending these festivities over the years for as long as I can remember, so coming here with two cameras strewn around my neck was my idea of a fun outdoor winter shoot. Here are a few of my favourites, though I think I could do better with more practice. The fire dancers were by far my favourite acts to photograph (and watch!). Bon festival !

Shedding Photoshop Guilt

This is a combo image made of 3 different photos: the first one is a shot taken inside the Fyxx, the second one is of Danielle with circles of confusion (taken at the King's Head before the Patrick Watson show in November), and the third photo is of a large tree from Assiniboine park on the first snowfall of the season. I had a bit of Photoshop fun, and now I think I'm hooked. This image was made for an emulation project for Creative Imaging. The photographer I chose to emulate is Katherine Sanderson. You should definitely check her out. Seeing her work has changed the way I think of the use of heavy photoshop manipulation on my photos. I'm thinking it's a whole other art form on its own, and I'm inspired to explore more of it (and shedding the guilt that used to come with it!).

I've been working on a Poetic Interpretation board assignment this week. I picked out a song by the Weakerthans ("Without Mythologies", my favourite) and created an image to go along with it. I've chosen the last one in the following series to be "the one". I had so much fun in the darkroom! This turned out to be a lot easier than I thought, though if I had more time, I would fix a lot of it (so excuse the bad technique and the really cruddy scan quality). I will not post the Weakerthans song on my blog - no, that will be reserved for the board at school. But, I will attach a poem that Dallas emailed me after she saw my prints yesterday. It's pretty cute.

Still life work has really been growing on me and this afternoon the idea to shoot rotting bananas on our piano came out of the blue. We haven't been sent outside to shoot a mini assignment a lot lately. But today we were. A mini assignment is usually assigned at the end of every morning class, generally due by 4pm that day. And today must have been one of the coldest days of the winter. But a photographer never complains!

Actually this was a great opportunity to get our butts out the door and into the frigid streets of Winnipeg. The shoot was rewarding, even though I had to sprint for the last block back to school. Being cold hurts!

I took an evening class at PrairieView a couple of years ago, and we had a few moms with young children in our class. They always had pictures of their kids and I never quite understood why moms took soooo many pictures of their kids. Well, lately I've been around a lot of kids with my camera, and, to say the least, I've been click-happy. So I suppose, in one small way, I understand the whole kid-picture-taking now. And as parents do, I'm going to post tons of kid pictures today, whether you "get it" or you're tired of it. Yay!

The Remnants of Christmas

I was shooting for my next film assignment this afternoon on b&w HP5 film, and had such a hoot that I decided to pull out my digital camera to get a few "instant" shots, in colour, just for you.

I collected some pretty sad, rotting Christmas oranges from Chad's kitchen and pulled out my old pomegranate from my original still life emulation shoot that I did during the holidays. Together, it made for some pretty rotten-looking fruit - in all its beautiful decay!

They now rest in peace, somewhere in my mom's now stinky kitchen garbage can.

I trudged through knee-deep snow to get this shot (and others) without any boots.

Not the greatest shot, but I've been meaning all winter to get a lonely field tree picture. This was at the end of our long day, and we were tired of stopping on the side of the highway to take pictures, so Anna suggested I roll down my window. It was cold, windy, and you can tell in the grass we were cruising at +100km/h. I'll have to try again another time. I suppose the snow is here for a while...

Still Life

For my business class, I wrote a paper on Irving Penn and followed up with creating an image emulating his style. I love his still life work, and so I thought I'd give it a shot. I'm not super happy with what I came up with, but I got stuck, and I didn't quite know how to fix it. The more I look at it, the more I like it. I love the grittiness and imperfections found in Penn's still lifes, and I hope I pulled that off in this image. Those are a few darkroom prints that didn't quite turn out, and I thought squirting some pomegranate goop on it would give it flare. I have to thank my parents for their patience. I took over the kitchen table (and the whole dining room) to shoot this. But I did hear a grumbling about me being a loony artist because my dad had to eat lunch on the couch instead. :) Oh, they love it. It adds a little more life to the house.

It's that time of year: everyone's got holidays and you're going through your cellphone contacts, trying to figure out how many coffee dates you can set up before school or work starts up again. It's that time of year when you think you're going to catch up on everything that you couldn't do in the past 3 months, but everything ends up being left to the side, and nothing gets done. It's the time of year where we've got the longest break from our daily routine, but somehow we run out of time to do everything else we had planned. I love the holidays!

I managed to sneak out to Birds Hill park's Pine Ridge Hollow in the biggest snowstorm of the year with my sisters to meet up with another pair of sisters. We had the healthiest pancakes in the world (the kind that put white bread to shame), and had girl talk. Yay for girl talk.And now I'm going to try to finish all my school assignments so that the next 2 weeks feel more like guilt-free holidays. I wonder what that will feel like...

My favourite assignment for the Christmas break has to be the one Ross gave us: we basically self-assign ourself any shooting project we want. I've barely done any abstract or art photography since school started, so I jumped at the occasion as soon as I found out I had free reign. I was like a kid in a sandbox in my friends' yard out in the country this afternoon. Macro lens in tow, and a bright (even hot!) sun above, and voilà. I must say so myself, my heart leapt when I pulled them up in photoshop. I live for moments like that!

Busy busy busy! I've been nose-deep in work and assignments, so I apologize for the dust that's collected on this blog. I've been shooting lots, but most of my images are either not scanned, or technical tests, or just not suited for a blog, so I'm going to hold you guys over with an old one (shot back in October for my landscapes assignment).

It's me-time. (better known as self-portrait time) I'm not one to do self-portraits. When I first discovered flickr a couple years ago, I was surprised at how much photographers love to take self-portraits. It baffled me! Piles and piles of groups dedicated to self-portraiture, and tons of people doing the "one-self-portrait-a-day" challenge. Why are people obsessed with taking and displaying their own faces? I cringe at the thought of doing that, and openly showing it off.

But there's nothing we won't learn at PrairieView. And self-portraiture is one of those things. So I put on my best faces and shot tons of mes. At first I wasn't too happy with the results, but I then I had fun in photoshop. These collections of my faces will be part of my assignment, due as a presentation in class next Monday. So many of me. I can hardly handle it. So now I shamelessly show off my self-portraits, because maybe that will make me more of a well-rounded photographer.

Lately I've been hearing a lot of comments from people about "just photoshop it out" when a picture is about to be taken or when they're trying to make their pick out of a pool of photos.

Have we ever stopped and thought about the way we look at photography now that we're in the digital age? Sure, a lot is possible with photoshop, and you can really manipulate your images to make them better in whichever way you deem is needed. But what has ever happened to improving your photos before releasing the shutter? Or how about working with reality, rather than altering it after the fact, according to what we need or want?

I believe that a good digital image doesn't need more than a few tweaks in photoshop. If you really want to get a nicer background, move that chair. If the eyes are closed, make sure you take one more for safety. Photoshop should not be your crutch or your safety net. We've got to start seeing the photo before it's taken, rather than trying to fix it into something we wished it was.

Once again, I was blown away by an amazing show at the West End Cultural Centre. I don't know what it is, but I've had the chance to see some pretty awesome shows around Winnipeg in the past little while. Patrick Watson graced us with their presence two nights ago - and what a show it was! I took the time to snap a few shots, though I was pretty much enthralled by the performances the whole entire time. Lighting was RED and LOW, and I didn't have my tripod - but my trusty little 50mm lens did the trick. Pardon the camera shake, high ISO and major cropping, but this was concert shooting practice I really needed!
Plants and Animals opened up. They were amazing! They could have easily had their own show. I can't wait for more than just an EP from them!

Jam Night

The Ministry of Arts and Culture had a jam night last week. (please note that we don't take ourselves as seriously as the pretentiousness of our group name might infer... ) It was low-key (the setting, not the songs) and a good time. Anna is pretty much the only one who plays an instrument. Duncan took pictures, and April and I tried learning a few chords. We're pretty sure jam night's going to become a common event. Yeeha! Hopefully more than 4 people will show up next time. (Come on people! Attendance is down! The excuses better be school related!)I don't know how Anna's little hands manage to play all those complicated chords.

April is seriously going to start learning how to play the guitar. She's going to start with a Holly McNarland song, apparently.

Escape to Brandon

A while ago, April, Duncan and I formed a group at school and named it the Ministry of Arts and Culture. Every week or so we get people together and go out to art galleries, or to see films, or shows... to get all of us students more submerged in the arts and culture of our city (and world) in the hopes of becoming better artists/creators while working on our photography.

Every Monday we have a board assignment due at school. A theme is assigned, and each student posts their photo on the walls in the main space area at school. This week's theme was light. It gives us all a good chance to see everyone's work and how they interpret the theme. Very interesting, and often inspiring....
